The
direct financial benefit of using the Flexi-Panel to size grade
farmed salmon prior to harvest can clearly be seen in the following
example, which is taken from actual harvest results in May 2002.
The
farmer required to harvest approximately 40 tonnes of salmon out
of a cage containing approximately 200 tonnes.
There
were two options;
Harvest
a large number of ungraded fish to give the required tonnage.
Size
grade the fish, harvesting only the larger grades, thereby requiring
less fish to give the same tonnage.
Note:
Larger size categories fetching a higher price per Kg.
RESULTS:
Option
1: 13,616 fish harvested (ungraded) value £ 45,772
Option
2: 9,892 fish harvested (large graded) value £ 59,854
Benefits
of size grading prior to harvest:
£14,082
EXTRA income to the farmer for harvesting 3724 LESS fish.
And
the benefits don't stop there; by grading out a lesser number
of larger fish you still have many more small fish available to
grow on to the optimum size, thereby ensuring that you can produce
the maximum tonnage of fish at the best possible prices.
